Hear Burkhard Schaefer presenting about SiLA & AnIML: Non-proprietary cloud connectivity and data management enabling digital transformation recorded at SmartLab exchange on January 27th, 2021.

Standard protocols and data formats can serve as infrastructure enablers for integration of instruments, systems, and seamless data flow. Several initiatives are gaining in this area. We review the progress of the AnIML and SiLA 2 standardization initiatives, which can provide key building blocks to establish interoperability.

SiLA 2 has added a vendor-neutral cloud-native connectivity protocol to its family of standards. This allows secure connection of an on-premise instrument to a cloud-hosted software environment. By offering an open, cloud-native approach, vendors no longer need to establish proprietary alternatives. This initiative is enabling a major push to leveraging the cloud in the lab.

While SiLA provides webservice-based communication standards for interfacing with instruments, AnIML specifies an XML-based standard data format for analytical data. This format is fully cloud-ready. It allows end-to-end documentation of laboratory experiments, and facilitates exchange of such data across the cloud.

This presentation explores the cloud connectivity capability of SiLA 2, and showcases the combination with AnIML for a global enterprise deployment for integration of chromatography data systems.

Thanks to Burkhard Schaefer and the SmartLab exchange-Team!

Applied Scientific Technologies have adopted the SiLA 2 communication protocol into our newly launched Deft (Digital Enabled Formulation Toolkit). Deft is specifically designed to integrate any bench lab equipment into a secure digital network and capture all data exchange between the user, the lab instrument, a LIMS and/or external stand-alone network.

The phrase “The whole is greater than the sum of all it’s parts” is never more relevant than when considered alongside the goal of laboratory digitalisation. It is only by integrating laboratory devices and services can you truly achieve the benefits that are on offer.  Our vision at SiLA is to digitalise R&D laboratories while allowing you to continue to focus on the science. This means that the integration must be easy and fast. And the best way to do this is to use standards.

We have recently worked with @HDC (Hit Discovery Constance), @Siobra, @KNIME and @Biosero, a group of Biologists, Data Scientists, Software Developers and Integrators to demonstrate how to allow the KNIME Analytics platform to interact with lab instruments directly. It was amazing how quickly the team got the prototype together and the primary reason for this was the use of #SiLA 2, free and open systems communication and data standards.

We’ll be at #SLAS2021 digital where we’ll be able to share more about this exciting collaboration and show the power of standards in action!

Dear SiLA friends and members

After our first successful online hackathon in September, the next virtual hackathon is open for registration.

Date: Tuesday, October 13th, 2020,
Time: 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm CET // 9:00 am – 3:00 pm EST

Place: Virtual event (link to zoom meeting will follow)

As we had lots of interested parties from other time zones, we decided to amend the timing a little to make it more convenient for non-European to participate.

This hackathon is going to be all about SiLA 2. The event will be carried out virtually, with a main zoom meeting and breakout rooms. We especially invite interested parties with no previous knowledge of SiLA to join this event. Come and hear about what the standard is, and how important SiLA and AnIML are for the digitalized lab of the future.

We welcome both technical and non-technical staff to join us.

For non-technical staff, this will be an ideal opportunity to learn about how the standard can help you in the lab and make your daily work easier.

For technical staff, you have the chance to actively help to develop the standard, to hack, try out SiLA and AnIML enhanced equipment, to talk to our technical experts, and much more.

Don’t miss out and reserve your seat for this free event today! Reservation deadline is October 9th, 2020. A Google account is required for registration. Should you not have a google account, please contact us by mail for registration.
