Closed-loop make-test-design platforms: What is happening in Europe?

Developing products of any kind often happens in iterative cycles. For example, small molecule drugs emerge after numerous cycles of “Lead Optimization”: Medicinal chemists synthesize variants of an active molecule, their activities are then measured in bioassays, based on which a new round of syntheses is planned.

The idea to fully automate, and thereby enormously accelerate, such development cycles has been around for many years. However until recently, the technical challenges were simply too high.
With recent advances in the automation of chemistry, biology, and machine learning approaches, this is about to change. An increasing number of companies and institutions are taking on the challenge.

In this interactive meeting, we want to engage in a dialog to address questions such as these:

  • Where are closed-loop make-test-design platforms emerging in Europe and beyond?
  • What is the status on integral automation of chemistry and bioassays?
  • How will such systems be controlled, what is the role of AI/machine learning?
  • What is the role of standards such as SiLA to enable such platforms?

The discussion will be launched and guided by experts in chemistry and biology lab automation from Roche, Novartis, Idorsia, and other companies. Seats are limited, we therefore ask for registration by e-mail.

If you are interested to actively contributeto the event, please get in contact with the Organizing Committee directly by e-mail. We look forward to hearing from you.

We are very excited about the SiLA Hackathon taking place in Santa Clara, USA on June 28th, 2019. At this first SiLA Hackathon in the US, we welcome both, technical as well as non-technical staff.
To get you running, we want to introduce a set of Quick Start guides and README’s to you:

Please select a relevant guide based on the language you plan to work with. In the C# and Java guides, you will get a full walkthrough on how to install, setup and run a SiLA server and interact with it via the SiLA browser – a free client software provided by UniteLabs.

If you plan to get hands-on with the reference implementations, please try the guide of the language of choice before the Hackathon to make sure your system is ready for SiLA development – let us know if there are any issues. To aid with communication please join our Slack Community. Where you can ask any questions and collaborate with the rest of the participants.

  • Description:

Automation, digitization and device networking are trends that cover all industries and have become indispensable in our everyday lives. The Laboratory of the Future is also shaped by these trends and holds major challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

When talking about The Laboratory of the Future, one often thinks of data. Easier generation, better use, and more efficient data management play a significant role. Without an easily accessible database and an optimal data flow between systems, modern data analysis, machine learning and methods of artificial intelligence cannot be realized.

You would like to know how data exchange in The Laboratory of the Future might look like? Or are you interested in designing more efficient data management?

Then join the workshop with integrated hackathon on 04. July 2019 in Konstanz.

Time: 09:30 – 16:30 /  Costs: free entry

Place: The Plant Konstanz, Gebäude „12 in The Plant“, Byk-Gulden-Str. 2, Konstanz, 78467 Deutschland

BioLAGO organizes the event, together with SiLA and AnIML, as part of the “Labor 4.0” project. The aim of the event is to support and facilitate exchanges between users of SME laboratories and IT automation solution providers on data exchange and management, interfaces and multi-vendor device control.

For non-technical laboratory workers: this is an ideal opportunity to learn more about how standards can help you in the lab and make your daily work easier. After the presentations you can deepen the topics in workshops and exchange ideas. The agenda for the workshops can be found here (Vorträge & Workshop).

For technical staff: those interested in engineering can actively participate in the development of the standard hackathon, try out SiLA and AnIML-enhanced devices, talk to our technical experts, and more. More information on the process can be found here (Hackathon).

Do not miss the BioLAGO joint hackathon workshop with SiLA and AnIML. Secure your place today by registering via the online registration form.

The SiLA 2 community and reach of the lab automation standard is growing!

On March 26, a group of experienced as well as new people to the SiLA standard gathered at wega in Basel, Switzerland. Whereas the newcomers got a quick-start introduction and began coding their first SiLA services, the experienced group discussed and coded current hot topics of the SiLA community: Authentication and authorization, encryption and transferring of large data sets. Hackathons are a great opportunity to meet the community. Many details of the SiLA 2 standard were challenged and improved at these.

Are you interested in joining the next hackathon? Contact us for more information.
